Our Work Beyond Snug

Caring for Children, Beyond Our Walls

At Snug Dental, our commitment to accessible care extends beyond our San Jose office. Through our volunteer work with Hospital de la Familia in Nuevo Progreso, Guatemala, members of our team support pediatric dental care under general anesthesia, alongside the hospital’s other specialized medical and surgical services.

Our focus is service, collaboration and helping more families reach the care they need.

Why the hospital is there

Hospital de la Familia & the Community It Serves

Hospital de la Familia is in Nuevo Progreso, in rural western Guatemala, a region where poverty, mountainous terrain, limited transportation and too few healthcare resources can make even basic medical care hard to reach. Specialized services are especially scarce outside the country’s major cities.

Patients often travel hours, and sometimes days, to reach the hospital. Many come from across the border in Mexico.

How we’re connected

Our Connection to Hospital de la Familia

Our relationship with the hospital grew through the long involvement of our anesthesiologist, Dr. Michael Mellenthin. He first volunteered there in the 1990s, returned after a long break, and has been closely involved for the past six to seven years. Today he is Chair of the Hospital de la Familia Foundation and helps strengthen its specialty services, including the dental department.

Through that relationship, our team has been able to contribute its expertise in pediatric dentistry and general anesthesia to the hospital’s growing dental program.

What we contribute

Specialized Dental Care Where It’s Needed

Children with extensive dental disease, very young children, children with developmental or special healthcare needs, and others who can’t tolerate conventional treatment may need general anesthesia to complete their care safely.

During our volunteer work at Hospital de la Familia, our team provides comprehensive pediatric dental treatment under general anesthesia, including:

The collaborative approach between dentistry and anesthesia used at Hospital de la Familia is the same model that is central to the care we provide every day at Snug Dental, and an expertise we are grateful to be able to share beyond our own community.

How we collaborate

Working Together, Learning Together

We work within an established, Guatemalan-led hospital. Guatemalan physicians provide care year-round, while visiting specialty teams work alongside local providers to expand access to services that can be hard to find.

Our team adapts to the resources available, shares techniques and ideas, learns from local providers and other visiting specialists, and brings those experiences home to Snug.

Each trip challenges us to think creatively, adapt to different resources and approach complex patient care in new ways, lessons we bring home to the children and families we care for at Snug.

The broader mission

More Than Dentistry

Hospital de la Familia provides medical care year-round and hosts visiting specialty teams, supporting surgery, women’s health, pediatric care, eye care and more. Our dental work is one part of a much larger collaboration.

Looking Ahead

We plan to keep returning to Hospital de la Familia and supporting the growth of its dental program. As the department develops, the goal is to help strengthen its resources, equipment and treatment capabilities so local and visiting dental professionals have more options for providing comprehensive care.

We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute our experience, learn from the Hospital de la Familia team and continue supporting the growth of its dental program in the years ahead.
